Hillside World Academy’s parody of Uptown Funk

Grade 4 students at Hillside World Academy collaborated with their homeroom and music teachers to produce a song and dance that displays their interpretation of Mark Ronson’s Uptown Funk. Students were encouraged to use common terms or slang from Malay, Chinese, and Indian languages as well as local dialects (Singlish) in their lyrics to demonstrate their understanding of various cultures that influence Singapore. Students were also assessed on creativity and musicality. A copy of the picture of the Grade 4 class and the lyrics is as follows:

Lah …lah lah lah lah shiok….

Bought my food in Bugis town,
It is so hot and spicy - SHIOK!
Ice cream man is everywhere,
You can’t miss it – one dollar leh!
Pandan, jagung, red bean and durian,
They go well with teh tarik and char kuey teow – makan makan!

I’m too hot, on air-con
Call auntie or kakak, can?
I’m too hot, jin zhua ar
Make ais kacang with atap chee
I’m too hot, on air-con
Otherwise I complain non stop
I’m too hot, jin zhua ar
Get me lengmong-honey
Break it down

Everybody say ‘ang mo’ (ang mo!)
Everybody say ‘wahlau’ (wah lau!)
Everybody say ‘kiasu’ (‘kiasu’!)
Cos uptown Singapore will give it to ya!
Cos uptown Singapore will give it to ya!
Cos uptown Singapore will give it to ya!
Saturday night and we in the spot. Don’t believe me just watch!
Don’t believe me just watch (come on)
Don’t believe me just watch
Don’t believe me just watch

Hey, hey, hey, oh!

Fill my cup put some Horlicks in it
Take a sip, write your name

Smoother than a fresh jar of kaya!

I’m too hot, on air con
Call auntie or kakak, can?

Make ais kacang with atap chee
I’m too hot, on air-con
Otherwise I complain non stop
I’m too hot, jin zhua ar
Get me lengmong-honey
Break it down

Everybody say ‘ang mo’ (‘ang mo’!)
Everybody say ‘wahlau’ (‘wahlau’!)
Everybody say ‘’kiasu” (‘kiasu’ $$$$$)

Don’t brag about it, come show me
Come on, dance

If you ‘jinsui’; then flaunt it
